  • ENG - ANERSAAQ - SPIRIT OF PLACE - STEDETS ÅND

The project «Anersaaq/Spirit of place/Stedets ånd» (2016-18) had its origin in various common elements among the Nordic countries. Maria Gradin presented a series of seven images dealing with the sea and birds. The pictures were projected outdoors, with an audience gathered completely by chance. Each showing was joined to works by other invited artists from the Nordic countries and Greenland. The project took form as a collaboration between visual and media artists, musicians, museums, cultural organizations, and children, the goal being to produce light and sound installations in public spaces. The overall approach was simultaneously artistic, cultural, and social. Creative workshops for children and youth were held where the project was shown.

The group show was initiated by the collective Tura Ya Moya and curated by Karen Thastum (DK/Berlin). Tura Ya Moya works with media installations in unusual places: grottoes, mountainsides, siloes, historic castles, or the Nordic embassies in Berlin with their modern architecture. The group manages unique works composed of light and sound bytes. For this project a container was constructed to ship the exhibition to each place. Eight artists were invited from the Nordic countries. Pictorial material was projected as black-and-white slides.

The container housing the art project was on tour along the seaway between Greenland, Norway, Iceland, and Denmark from the beginning of 2016 and visited even the smallest country settlements in the north. The greatest number of sites were in Greenland. The exhibition, also shown in Lithuania and Latvia, had its final showings in Berlin and Århus, culture capital 2017/18.
